Heimr has five basic elements, from which all other matter is created.
The elements and their respective gods are fire ( Danu ), earth ( Gataur ), air ( Talor ), water ( Januri ) and spirit ( Ratish ).
Elemental energy flows from the north pole where it is created in a constant stream by the gods and flows south towards the south pole of Heimr. The flow of elemental energy is called the primordial flow .
Absorbing elemental energy and eating
Every living being and object on Heimr absorbs the relevant elemental energy it needs to function from this flow. If any matter takes an edible form, living beings can eat this form to regain their strength and replenish their elemental energy in allot faster way than absorbing it from the flow directly. Edible forms of matter also have a very different structure from the raw elemental energies in the flow and can more easily be used by the body as building blocks.
Only very talented and old mages have developed the skill necessary to shape their bodies in such a way that they gain all the needed energy from the elemental flow directly, defeating their need to feed on edible substance all together.
Fire
Apart from the obvious places where fire can be found. Lava, lightning, natural occurring brushfire, etc. The fire element is also at the core of every warm-blooded living beeing. It warms their bodies and burns the fuel provided by edible matter. Some Heimerian scholars also state that the fire element is responsible for heated emotions, pointing to the Fae race as prove.
Earth
Physical bodies and organs are mainly composed of the earth element. This is especially true for the Tellurian race. Apart from this earth can be found all across heimr in different shapes, like mud, rocks, swamps, beaches, dunes, mountains, caves and hills. Some Heimerian scholars also state that the earth element is responsible for cold and stoic emotions.
Air
Air is the element that we breath and smell and see in the form of smoke and mist and feel in the form of wind and storms. Air fills our lungs and is apart from eating a very valuable source of elemental energy in a easy to access structure. Some Heimerian scholars state that the air element is responsible for calculated thought and practical rationality.
Water
Our blood and other bodily fluids have water as their main component. Allot of races on heimr are composed mainly of water and earth, with a fire core and air in their skull and lungs. Water of course covers a very large part of Heimr, from the rain and snow to the rivers and seas. It is drunk by all races, plants and animals and is also a good source of elemental energy. Some Heimerian scholars state that the water element is responsible for dreams, daydreams and far away plans.
Spirit
Spirit is the only element that can touch both the physical world and the spiritual world. Spirit is the element that links the body to the soul. If the physical integrity and structure of the body is harmed enough the spirit element that is intertwined with the other four elements unravels breaks and snaps. Like a balloon with a string no longer held by the body, the soul will than return to it's source, the gods, travelling trough limbo to get their.
The spirit element is invisible to the naked eye and resides half in limbo. Ethical choices of good and evil that are made by the soul are randomly influenced by the vibrations of the spirit string. These vibrations are the echoes of the ballade of existence that is hurled back to Heimr by the angels and demons of Ratish . This process corrupts or exalts individuals souls to small or greater degrees. This process is called free-will.
